Making the quantum leap

Submitted by Nick on

The Financial Times recently released an article written by the Chief Executive of Cambridge Quantum Computing, Ilyas Khan, about why quantum proofing our cyberspace is needed now. With the advent of the first quantum computers this year, it won't be long now before current encryption standards are cracked by computers more powerful than the ones we currently know and use. It's a very thought provoking article. The cracking of AES-256 being cracked last year, and these newer quantum computers starting to show up outside of just theory, it leads one to ask themselves, how long will it be before our new standard, DES will be cracked, and just how long can our security measures survive before we no longer have any security measures to counter these faster machines?
